Paulette Brockington, winner of the 2004 World Swing Dance Championships West Coast Swing Jack and Jill, 2000 World Fast Dance Championships and 2000 Virginia State Open Swing Dance Championships Open Hustle Jack and Jill competitions to name a few, is a director/choreographer, dancer and actress who has had roles in feature and industrial films, television and radio commercials, and many stage productions.

Paulette was a Fulbright Award nominee by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars to Kenya in Theater. She has been a member of and/or guest artist with modern dance companies, ballet companies, acting companies and opera companies. She is a versatile performer able to perform in modern dance, ballet, jazz, tap, ballroom, ethnic dance and swing. An active artist-in-residence and workshop teacher, she has choreographed and performed receiving honors/awards and grants for her work.

A commission to choreograph a dance work set in the Swing Era ultimately led her to Frankie Manning, an original member of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers who were based at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom, for private study in the Lindy Hop and other dances of the period. This led to an introduction to the world of competitive ballroom dance. She is well-versed in a variety of swing dance styles and is an active swing dance competitor, coach and judge.

In addition to training with artists like Uta Hagen, Mikell Pinckney, Judith Jamison, Bella Lewitzky, Joel Hall, Frankie Manning and Skippy Blair in theater, concert dance and ballroom and swing.

She has been a leading force in the development of swing dance in the Great Lakes area as a teacher, dancer and competitor. She has had the honor of partnering Frankie Manning on several occasions. He says she is "One of America's premiere dancers." Chazz Young says she puts the "F" in funk.

In 2008 Paulette was the ArtServe Michigan's K-12 Arts Educator nominated as a finalist for the Governor's Award for Arts and Culture as Arts Educator of the Year (a run-off between a K-12, a college and a community educator).

Paulette has adapted a number of works for the stage including Shakespeare: A Tragedy on Thursday, A Comedy Tonight, A Thousand Cranes, American Beauty, Puberty: The Game Show and others too numerous to mention. She  is the author of and teaches in the video Lindy Hop, An Open Class and writer of a number of articles and guides.

She maintains a freelance career doing workshops, judging, coaching, staging and directing all kinds of productions.

Far better it is, To dare mighty things, To win glorious triumphs, Even though checkered with failure. then to live in that grey twilight, that knows neither victory nor defeat. - (apply to dance contests) Theodore Roosevelt

I think anybody, anybody that wants to join our military right now and abide by that code of conduct should be kissed on the mouth and  thanked, including convicts. I say put psychopaths in. Who wouldn't  want Hannibal Lector. I'd take 50,000. Say 'Look over there. That's a buffet. Have all you can eat....'

Give me a bucket of Chicken and a Count Basie record and I can solve the Palestinian problem.

Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

ArtServe Michigan's mission is to cultivate the creative potential of Michigan's arts and cultural sector to enhance the health and well-being of Michigan, its people and community. The Governor's Awards for Arts & culture are Michigan's premiere statewide celebration and one way in which it contributes to and recognizes the vitality, diversity and depth of the sector with its awards for arts, culture and creativity. I had the opportunity to be the nominee for this year's Arts Educator of the Year representing arts educators in the K-12 sector.
